Wigadoo is closing down - what you need to know

It is with great regret that we have to let you know that Wigadoo will be closing.

Over the coming weeks we will slowly close down the site, enabling any existing events to close, and any outstanding account balances to be transferred to bank accounts.

We understand that if you have been organising an event on Wigadoo that you may be concerned about the security of your money. All monies remain, as has always been the case, safely stored by Newcastle Building Society, and are in no way jeopardised by the status of Wigadoo. However, as access to your card details and bank transfer facilities are via the Wigadoo website, we would ask that you collect and transfer any outstanding funds to your bank account before the 30th April 2009. There will be no fees for Bank Transfers.

For those of you who are currently running events, your friends can continue to pledge - the site is still working as normal - we just ask that you finish the event by 30th April 2009.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience that closing the site causes you. We would sincerely like to thank all of you, who as early adopters helped to introduce Wigadoo to the world.

If you have any questions or concerns we are contactable, as always, by phone of email. You can reach us at help@wigadoo.com or by phone on 0845 220 2442.

Thank you,

The Wigadoo Team

P.S. If you'd like to know more about why Wigadoo is closing down, please see the blog post below.

Wigadoo - That's all folks

Today it's Wigadoo's turn to say "That's all folks". With heavy hearts we are announcing that we will be closing down the site over the next few weeks.

You may be wondering "Why?". The short answer is that we ran out of time and money (money to run the business that is, all event account money is not handled by us - so it's all safe).

A longer answer would probably say that we underestimated how long it would take to get Wigadoo off the ground. Marketing Wigadoo required both building awareness of the site, and convincing people to use it (nothing new there). However, since Wigadoo was designed to only be used 3 or 4 times a year, the transition through "I could use it" to "I would use it" to "I will use it" to "I used and love it" was longer than we could afford. We would have needed significantly more time and money to grow a large user base and get to profitability. Unfortunately, although understandably, the current investment environment has little appetite for consumer facing internet companies that will take time to get to scale and profitability. We managed to prove that Wigadoo was something that people wanted, we just couldn't demonstrate a cost effective way to get millions of people to use it in a feasible time frame.

We fully expect to see the Wigadoo vision realised by someone else in the next few years, and wish whoever takes up the challenge the best of luck. For those of you who used and loved Wigadoo, we hope you don't have to wait too long for this day to come.

We would sincerely like to thank all of you, who as early adopters helped to introduce Wigadoo to the world. Your willingness to try out new and innovative products is key to making the world a better place. Please, please, please keep up your good work.

It's been a heck of a journey for Wigadoo. It started off in late 2006 as three people with an idea. We then raised an early round of angel financing off the back of a business plan that let us build a working prototype. The first year was all about building a beast of a financial platform (and persuading MasterCard and other financial partners to go with it), a website and raising a second round of angel financing. After finally gaining all the necessary financial approvals we then went live last summer. The site got better and better and we managed to get a good number of partner sites to add Wigadoo links to their sites, including lastminute.com, Merlin Entertainment and Lucky Voice. We're proud of what we achieved and would like to thank everyone who contributed along the way, whether working with us or just sharing our belief.

Wigadoo represented the love, sweat and tears of many people. The site was built mainly by the 4Es (Eva, Evtim, Erik and Ed) with support from Tony, Krum, Marianna and Sia of Melon Tech in Sofia. The design started in Chile and finished in Battersea, with inspiration along the way from Anna, George, Jack and finally in the very capable hands of Damon at Pynk & Fluffy. The site was well marketed by Nick. Allen and Larne deserve special mention for their work on all the financial stuff, and Peter at Elavon helped light the spark that made it all work. Thanks to all the partner sites that believed in us, especially Fleur, Sophie and Jane at lastminute.com, Alex at AKA UK, Gill at Merlin and Emma at Lucky Voice. Thanks also to Bindi at Microsoft for all her support and encouragement.

Super special mention goes to all our investors. They belong to a small yet incredibly important band of people who live in support of the new. In this case it didn't work out, but we hope that they, like all our early adopters, will not be dissuaded. For our own part, everyone here at Wigadoo is looking forward to the future.

Thank you again to everyone who supported, advised and helped us over the past years (and just in case we forget, an enormous thank you to our families, partners and friends who've listened to us talk about nothing else for so long.)

Andy, John and Uma

The 50 Best Travel Websites

It is official, Wigadoo is the 'Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything'.

Named as #42 in the Indepenent's 'The 50 Best Travel Websites' this is a clear signal to all followers of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It took Deep Thought 7 1/2 million years to compute the answer to Life, and we've (humbly) brought you the web version in a little under 2 years. We're hoping that Marvin the Paranoid Android will be available for the press launch! For the geekier one's amongst you we have set-up a debate to discuss the subtler aspects of the number 42 - join in

Very busy, busy, busy bees

We have been busy bees at Wigadoo, working hard to make this world a little better! But we've neglected our blog and that's just not good, so here we are back again in the blogosphere.

Over the coming weeks you'll see a lot of changes on the site, the first of which went live today. Everything will be simpler and easier for all, so we hope you like it (your views are our life blood so let us know!).

"But why have we been so busy?" I hear you ask. Well, over the past 6-7 months we've learned a lot about what people love about Wigadoo, and what they'd like changed. So we've gone back to the drawing board and taken your feedback on board and basically made things simpler. You'll see the end result shortly! We're going for the less is more approach to design. We hope you like it.

So what's new:-
1) We've got an all new Homepage that hopefully both makes it a bit clearer what we do and feels a bit more inspiring - a little reminder that Wigadoo is all about creating great times with friends
2) The process got simpler ... you can now set up an event in three clicks as opposed to 40!
3) The text just got smaller - we're no longer using a font size you can read from across the street, it's all a bit more compact and a bit more like other sites you may use
4) Until the end of the summer, using a debit card on the site will be completey free - so you and your group can pledge money in, and spend the money off the Virtual MasterCard for free. You can't say fairer than that.

What's coming:-
1) All pages will be spruced up and made more user friendly - less features you don't want, and easier to find what you do want.
2) You'll be seeing Wigadoo pop-up on more and more travel and leisure websites (we'll keep you posted)
3) The daily idea - follow-us on Twitter or the Blog and we'll give you a daily idea to escape to a life less ordinary

Enjoy the weekend! And if it's Monday, remember there's a weekend coming soon!

New Resource for Group Trip Ideas and Activities Launches Today

Today Wigadoo, the best way to organise agroup of people when money is involved, launches the new and improved Ideas Forum.

The Wigadoo Ideas Forum is the best place to find a multitude of activities, trips, holidays and things to do for groups of people. Whether you are planning a stag or hen party, looking for the best place to go on a group ski trip or just want to do something different or unusual with your group, we hope that you will be able to find it here.

We will be constantly adding and updating the ideas, which consist of things that Wigadooers have already done, and believe me there have been some amazing things organised so far, things that we think are particularly great and need special attention, or some interesting ideas from some of our trusted partners.

The Ideas Forum consists of an Ideas Wall where you can browse pictures of the ideas, the Ideas List, where it is easier to compare ideas side by side with more information, and the Features section, where we will highlight the best of the ideas and offer tips and advice to groups wishing to do stuff together.

We hope that you enjoy it and find it useful, and as ever your feedback is welcome.
